Abstract
In the face of more restrictive migration policies, quota systems, increased border controls and tighter security measures imposed on “aliens”, an ethical question arises spontaneously: is the welfare of migrants and their families included in the concept of better “management” of migration flows? In this book, a group of scholars from different parts of the world try to answer this question, through a shared analysis on specific migration issues which have a global impact. The volume compiles the papers presented at the 10th Metropolis International Conference held in Toronto, Canada (17-21 October 2005) in the workshop “Migration Management and Ethics: Envisioning a Different Approach” planned by the two editors. The various presentations try to offer a “ethical” assessment of some migration policies in South America, North America, Europe and Asia, highlighting the role of each stakeholder (governments, non-governement organizations and academies) towards a feasible process of “ethicization” of migration management.
Fabio Baggio, Ph.D., Director of the Scalabrini Migration Center in Manila (Philippines); editor of Asian and Pacific Migration Journal (APMJ) and the biweekly Asian Migration News (AMN).
Laura Zanfrini, Ph.D., Professor of Economic Sociology and of Sociology of Migration and Interethnic Relations at the Catholic University in Milan; head of Labour Sector and Documentation Sector at the ISMU Foundation in Milan.
