Abstract
2006: the constant growth of the foreign population in Italy is by now a fact we must reckon with. As from the 1990s up to now, increasingly higher immigrants’ rates have been reported. An evidence that our country, like other in Europe, has become an important place of destination within global migration processes. This ever-growing presence of foreigners is an element that gives rise to processes of change, which continuously issue new challenges to our interethnic and intercultural coexistence patterns, and require the development of a necessary balance between the right to diversity and the duty of integration.

Fondazione Ismu carries out documentation, training, information, study and research activities on themes related to multiethnicity, focusing in particular on international migrations. The Documentation and Research Centre – CeDoc (located in via Galvani 16, Milan, phone +39.02.67877930/42, e-mail: cedoc@ismu.org) offers the opportunity to consult a wide library including books and scientific reviews, a constantly updated database, and the possibility to make use of the technical advice of a team of experts in different branches. CeDoc opens to the public on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. For further information on Fondazione Ismu activities and having access to its literature, please contact the website www.ismu.org or the secretary’s office (e-mail address: ismu@ismu.org).
