OUR OPEN ACCESS MANIFESTO

Polimetrica Publisher works from a simple premise: that for a better future of the people it's possible to disseminate the knowledge by publishing innovative books freely accessible to anyone in the world who might be interested.

Informed by that premise, we're trying to build a new model of scientific publishing that embraces economic self-subsistence, openness, and fairness; the model is based on the following elements:

1) each scientific book is published in two editions: a printed edition, available in the market, and an electronic edition, freely available through the web; both editions are identified by a different ISBN code.
2) the electronic edition is covered by copyright, which regulates how anyone should make use of the work. All rights are reserved by the copyright holder. The copyright holder hereby gives the permission to reproduce and distribute the digital edition of the work, in whole or in part, under the conditions of the following licence:
Polimetrica License B.
Polimetrica License B gives anyone the possibility to distribute the contents of the work, provided that the Authors of the work, the Institute and the Publisher are always recognized and mentioned. It does not allow use of the contents of the work for commercial purposes or for profit. The Publisher has the exclusive right to publish and sell the contents of the work in paper and electronic format and by any other means of publication. Additional rights on the contents of the work are the Author's property.
3) each scientific book is edited in collaboration with universities or with authoritative professors or specialists.
4) the printed edition is distributed on the international market.
5) the electronic edition is free access through the Polimetrica web site.

Anyone interested in our activities is encouraged to buy the printed edition of our open access publications.

Please feel free to email us (editorial_office at polimetrica dot com) to make suggestions, comments, publications proposals.

We're open to any idea that will help us to achieve our goals of ensuring a new way to communicate the knowledge by the books and by the open access actions.

Your support is greatly appreciated.

Unorthodox Geology and Geophysics. Oil, Ores and Earthquakes (Shelia Guberman)

Unorthodox Geology and Geophysics. Oil, Ores and Earthquakes (Shelia Guberman)

Over the past 50 years geology and geophysics have been transformed through the use of mathematical methods and computer technology. This has led to much greater speed in the execution of already formalised procedures, together with the enormous advantage of the visualization of underground structures and geometry. However, despite the use of supercomputers and integral and differential equations, the accuracy of geological predictions has not substantially changed. In order to find a giant oil-field about 400 wells still have to be drilled, and earthquakes occur in areas which are still mapped as seismically inactive, including the 1994 Los Angeles quake. This book is directed towards changing important aspects of geological practice...

Information Societies and Digital Divides (Bernardo Sorj)

Information Societies and Digital Divides (Bernardo Sorj)

The book argues ICT are part of the set of goods and services that determine quality of life, social inequality and the chances for economic development. Therefore understanding the digital divide demands a broader discussion of the place of ICT within each society and in the international system. The author argues against the perspectives that either isolates ICT from other basic social goods (in particular education and employment) as well as those that argue that new technologies are luxury of a consumer society. Though the author accepts that new technologies are not a panacea for the problems of inequality, access to them become a condition of full integration of social life...

Dialogue about Systems (Shelia Guberman, Gianfranco Minati)

Dialogue about Systems (Shelia Guberman, Gianfranco Minati)

The word system is widely used in everyday language with different meanings often making it difficult to understand what a system is and what it is not. The concept is apparently easy to understand and its usage is based on general intuition rather than on solid theory. This Dialogue is not for popularizing or introducing the concept. The Dialogue is about some current, crucial issues related to systems in science, such as emergence, self-organization, theoretical role of the observer, cognitive science, pattern recognition and image understanding. The general framework of the Dialogue relates to epistemological issues. The reader is invited to participate in the dialogue, that is to identify and elaborate his/her questions and answers in those of the authors...
